Across KS2 our children are studying class texts and they are set comprehension questions by their teachers. In Y5/6 our children are also responsible for keeping their own reading log - each child is expected to read a minimum of one text per term (6-7 weeks) and keep a journal.
On 29th January 2015 we held a 'Reading and Spelling Worskhop for Parents' to introduce them to changes in the new curriculum. As a staff we see what a difference being able to not only decode but also comprehend the written word can have on a child's learning experiences. The use of phonics and decoding is only a small (although important) part of the reading experience.
Last summer we held further reading workshops for parents around the importance of good quality questioning to further support the children's understanding of both the written and inferred text.

We have just updated our Class Booklists. Here are some suggestions that have been taken from recommended literacy chairites alongside award winners. We do understand that there are many other books that could have been added to our lists but our suggestions may be of some help.
